Installation:
We tested the dongle on a 3G data service we were using. We were using a data card from a very popular Indian company on a Windows 7 OS PC. We took the sim card off the 3G data dongle and inserted the sim into the Sonic 3.5G dongle.
Installing the dongle is as easy as plugging the Dongle into the USB port. The dongle will install itself easily. In case it does not (which it did not in our case since we do not permit any software to install itself onto the computer without permission from the admin) all you need to do is to open the file, open the folder and double click on Start.exe to install the software. The software will ask permission (admin password) for installation which you need to allow. That’s it, the modem learns from your existing sim card connection (home network) type and configures itself, and it will be ready for use in less than two minutes time.
After successful installation the Zebronics modem windows will appear, for you to connect. One press on the connect button and you are connected.
Internet speed test: We used speedtest.net to test the speed of this Dongle this was what we got as the result. This seems a bit slow, but do note that the speed depends on multiple factors like strength of data network, traffic on the network. We used the evening hour of a working day for testing the dongle.
Comparison with a popular 3G data connection dongle
Connection speed: It takes the Zebronics Sonic modem to connect in 45 seconds to the Internet. This after the usual process of scanning the modem with anti-virus and authenticating for the network.
Our usual data connection dongle took 1.26 seconds to establish connection with the Internet. The process included scanning the modem with the anti-virus and authenticating for the network.
Page uploading speed: Uploading the webpage of took 10 seconds. 12 seconds was the speed for uploading the Facebook page (including the time for entering user id and password).
With our usual 3G model the uploading speed for of was fractions above the 11 seconds and uploading the facebook page took a time of 16 seconds (including the time for entering user id and password).
Document download speed: 34 KB page downloading speed was 3 seconds, for a 1.3 MB page download the speed the Sonic Dongle offered was 16 seconds.
The 34 KB page was ready for opening after download at 5 seconds with our usual Dongle. The 1.3 MB file was completely downloaded in 18 seconds.
YouTube viewing: We tried to view the YouTube video of iPhone 6-Innovative Screen which is of 0.57 seconds. It took a fraction of seconds above 6 seconds for us to start viewing the video.
Our regular Dongle took about 8 seconds before it could play the same video for us.
Other features
You get a database to store your phone numbers, make voice calls and also send SMS via the dongle. If you are on a prepaid data pack, there is USSD code facility that reduces your worries. This service helps you check your data balance.
Our Verdict
For Netbook, laptop users and for desktop users who want faster Internet this Sonic Dongle comes as a better and easy to use option to connect to Internet.
