Scherzinger playing very hard to get

Monday, February 17, 2014 15:32 IST

Singer Nicole Scherzinger has reportedly rejected Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton's marriage proposal thrice in a month.

Hamilton and Scherzinger rekindled their romance over Christmas 2013 after parting ways in July last year.

The 35-year-old has even moved her stuff into Hamilton's Monaco pad.

Hamilton, 29, is desperate to seal their relationship with a big summer wedding, however sources said that Scherzinger keeps saying no, reports dailystar.co.uk.

"Lewis is so desperate to hold on to Nicole this time around that he keeps asking her to marry him. But she's playing very hard to get. She thinks if she holds out Lewis will respect her more and not take her for granted like he has in the past," said a source.

"Lewis really wants to get engaged properly and then start planning a wedding for early August when he has a three-week break in the Formula One schedule. Nicole keeps rejecting him and is saying 'I need time to think about what I want.'," the source added.

Despite his girlfriend's stubbornness, Hamilton is convinced that she will say yes within a month.

"He's going to keep asking until he gets his way. Nicole is building a proper life with him again and spends every free second with him. So, as far as he is concerned, it's a matter of when rather than if."

"He has told his closest friends to keep the first two weeks of August free for a 'mind-blowing wedding'. Now all he needs is for her to agree to it," said a source.

Aamir Khan gets booked

Aamir Khan gets booked
Monday, February 17, 2014 13:54 IST
A coffee-table book on Aamir Khan - despite little assistance from the star himself - will hit the shelves this month

For a veteran photojournalist with over four decades of experience, writing a book seems like a logical progression. But every book has its quota of obstacles. Pradeep Chandra knows that quite well by now as he's already published two books earlier. Both were tributes to personalities he shares a deep connection with: Amitabh Bachchan and MF Hussain. However, this time around, it was a rather different challenge as the very subject of Chandra's latest book - Aamir Khan - didn't appear too keen on cooperating with him on his photographic endeavour.

Published by Niyogi Books and titled Aamir Khan: Actor, Activist, Achiever, the pictorial biography contains rare pictures of the Dhoom 3 star. It took Pradeep about a year to compile the photographs, stills, essays as well as interviews conducted exclusively for the book. So why Aamir, and not anyone else among his equally famous contemporaries? Turns out, the eminent photographer has been a fan of the celebrated actor for years. `After a book on Bachchan and Hussain saab, I was wondering whom should I focus on next. For some reason, Aamir Khan was an ideal candidate but it was the social impact of his TV show Satyamev Jayate that reinforced my interest in him,` says the 63-year-old. Though the idea was interesting, it was only when he got down to working that he realised that Aamir didn't reciprocate his earnestness. `Even after informing him on several occasions that I'm writing about him, there was not one particular instance when he showed concrete interest. But then, we know how busy actors could be so I simply went ahead with whatever I could manage on my own,` adds the mild-mannered gentleman.

Along with photographs, the book features perspectives of those who know Aamir from close quarters. As a result, there are anecdotal tidbits - mostly supported by pictures - throughout the read. `Ask anybody in the industry, and they'll talk about Aamir's greatness and professionalism. But I wanted to go a bit beyond that and support these observations with stories filled with a personal touch,` he says. In the middle of the book, there's one such incident involving Aamir's decision to patiently stand for five hours for a sculpture. It was part of promotional activities for Sarfarosh (1999) and the National Award-winner was more than willing to pose. According to Pradeep, things were simpler last millennium.

By things, he's referring to the days when PRs (public relations reps) didn't call the shots as far as media interaction went. As a kid, Pradeep used to venture into Filmistan near his house in Goregaon and once spotted director Shankar Mukherjee splashing water on Suchitra Sen in preparation for a sensual scene. `I was lucky to grow up in an era when stars not only picked up phones but also welcomed photographers to their film sets.

Today, it's all corporate and secretive,` he elaborates. Of course, there were exceptions too. For instance, Govinda made Pradeep wait for hours only to profusely apologise later. `He was funny,` Pradeep adds. On being asked which of the younger actors he'd like to feature in a book someday, pat comes the reply Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. `There's something about Ranbir which makes you like him while Deepika comes across as someone born to be clicked.`

For Mads age is just a number

For Mads age is just a number
Monday, February 17, 2014 13:56 IST

Madhuri Dixit does not buy into the myth that Bollywood actresses have a short shelf-life or they can't get work post marriage.

"Age is just a number according to me, talent is the same whether you are 10, 20 or 100. I think it gets better with age. I also don't believe in the myth about married actresses. I think it is crazy. "Sharmila Tagore worked after marriage, Rakhiji worked after marriage... Yes, some of them quit but that was their own decision. There were so many who did work. There are no hard and fast rules," Madhuri told PTI.

Madhuri ruled Bollywood in the '80s and '90s as one of the top stars but she shifted to the US post her marriage to Sriram Nene only to return in 2011. Her US stay did not lessen her sway over her audiences as she kept travelling back to star in movies like 'Devdas' and 'Aaja Nachle'.

Post her return, Madhuri is busy juggling between various TV shows, advertisement deals and films. She is ready to release her second film of 2014 'Gulaab Gang' following the success of 'Dedh Ishqiya'. Madhuri, however, feels women now have a bigger say in the industry compared to earlier times.

"There was a time in films when I never saw a female assistant director, camera person or make-up person. There were very few women directors who you could count on your fingers. "Now there are so many women working in different aspects of filmmaking. There are talented women directors like Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti. The sensibilities are changing," the actress said.

Madhuri also credits new age directors for thinking beyond stereotypes when it comes to female performers.

"The new age directors see women in a different light and write good roles for women. They are no longer caricatures of say an avenger, a victim, or an eye candy. They are people, they are characters. "What is amazing is that this is happening in mainstream. I liked what Deepika (Padukone) did in 'Cocktail' and 'Chennai Express'. I like this change and I think it is in the right direction," she said. Madhuri says she was attracted to her role in 'Gulaab Gang' because it comes with a lovely message despite belonging in the "entertaining, massy" category.

"My character is a vigilante who has a group of ladies with her. They help fight social injustices while working for women empowerment through education. It is a strong role and I had lot of fun doing action for the first time."

Madhuri says her two kids -- Arin and Raayan -- have settled down well in India after they move from Denver in 2011. "My kids came to India at the right moment. It would have been difficult if they were teen. They like it here, there is an informality here.

Friends can walk in anytime and play with them. They have managed well and I think they are happy," she says. Asked about the secret behind her fitness and beauty, the actress said it all lies in maintaining a balance. "I am very disciplined.

I know what to eat. I have a regime of five small meals a day. We have our dinner early. My dancing is the best exercise. Me and my husband are fitness freaks because children are like monkeys, they would follow you. So what you adopts as a lifestyle becomes the lifestyle for them.

Bipasha, who was supposed to be a part of the Temptation Reloaded tour in Malaysia, stayed back in Mumbai due to visa issues

Bipasha Basu was supposed to fly to Malaysia to be a part of Shah Rukh Khan's Temptation Reloaded tour, but the actress has stayed put in Mumbai due to visa troubles.

As a result, her application got rejected and she couldn't travel to Malaysia."

Is Jackie listening? Tamanna getting more attention from Sajid

Is Jackie listening? Tamanna getting more attention from Sajid
Monday, February 17, 2014 14:08 IST
According to rumours, the filmmaker is showering extra attention on the actress

Not long ago we had heard that director Sajid Khan was bonding with Esha Gupta, who stars in the director's film 'Humshakals'. But now the grapevine has it that the filmmaker has trained his sights on actress Tamannaah Bhatia, who, incidentally, stars in the same film.

Sources say that Khan has been openly expressing his fondness for Tamannaah; it is also being said that the two have grown close and have started spending more time together.

`Their equation looks like it is more than just a director-actress fling. The two have suddenly found things in common and this has brought them close. Their proximity has now raised eyebrows of many people on the film sets,` says a source.

The source adds that this development has irked the film's other actresses: namely, Bipasha Basu and Esha Gupta. Adds the source, `With Sajid and Tamanna growing close, often her scenes are shot before anyone else's. This means that often Bipasha Basu and Esha Gupta are made to wait for their scnes. Moreover, Tamannaah approaches Sajid directly for every other thing.`

When contacted, Sajid Khan chose to laugh it off. He replied, `This is utter rubbish. I only take shots according to my shot division and as per my DOP (Director of Photography)'s lighting.`

Shooting of this Salman Khan starrer was pushed by a few hours due to Saturday's downpour

Saturday's unseasonal rain may have not exactly thrown the city life out of gear but it disrupted the shoot for Sajid Nadiadwala's upcoming film 'Kick'. It has emerged that shoot for the film - that stars Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez - had to be pushed by a few hours due to heavy rains on Saturday morning.

According to sources, the film's cast was on its way to the film's sets when it started pouring. And given that this was an outdoor schedule, Sajid had no option but to cancel the shoot.

`They had planned to shoot an elaborate outdoor sequence in Filmcity on Saturday morning. But then it started raining heavily and Sajid initially decided to cancel the shoot. Fortunately for them, it stopped pouring after two hours, and they resumed shooting thereafter,` says a source.

Director Sajid Nadiadwala confirmed the news. `The shoot was delayed by three hours,` he replied.

No one is a threat for Parineeti

No one is a threat for Parineeti

Busy as a bee, Parineeti Chopra has a lot on her plate and says she is enjoying her work and doesn't feel threatened by her contemporaries.

"This is my fourth year in the industry. And I'm doing the work that I am really enjoying," said the actress who is rubbing shoulders with the likes of Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha.

With seven films to her credit, Parineeti says she is far more alert and anxious.

"Initially, I had nothing to lose. But with every passing film there are more expectations to live up to... There is a checklist of directors and actors you want to work with. The dreams expand and so do the anxieties. I want to be known for being versatile. So I'll search now for the roles that take me to another level."

The spirited scene-stealer says she doesn't see any of her contemporaries as rivals.

"I don't really feel anyone is a threat. There is enough room for everybody. That's how I feel right now. Maybe two years down the line, I'll start peering anxiously over my shoulder. But at the moment I'm happy to be just doing the work that I am," said the actress who debuted with "Ladies Vs Ricky Behl".

Parineeti has no regrets about opting out of Shoojit Sircar's next film "Piku", in which she was to play Amitabh Bachchan's daughter.

"The dates clashed with another film. I was so looking forward to it because it gave me a chance to work with two of the finest actors we have - Bachchan saab and Irrfan," she said and added: "Maybe it was too early for me to work with these stalwarts. I'd have probably forgotten my lines and just stared at them."

As for losing out on the chance of doing a father-daughter film with the Big B, Parineeti said: "I have a very strong father-daughter bonding with Anupam Kher sir in 'Daawat-e-Ishq'. As for Bachchan saab, I'm sure I'll have other opportunities to work with him."

"The audiences saw a new me in 'Hasee Toh Phasee'. Now they'll see me in an entirely new avatar in Shaad Ali's 'Kill Dill'.

"I've lots on my plate. Till the release of 'Hasee Toh Phasee', I was shooting two films, dubbing and promoting. There was no time for myself. And I can't complain. Good scripts are coming my way. Obviously I can't say yes to every film and endorsement that comes my way."

About losing out on the popular awards this year, the pragmatic Parineeti said: "Deepika Padukone deserved them. It would have been odd if I or anyone else got them. But I was nominated. And I was very happy."

Having worked with Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput, Siddharth Malhotra and Aditya Roy Kapoor, Parineeti says she's close to all of them.

"But there is a special bonding with Arjun. We spent three months shooting together in Lucknow. Now I've spent a lot of time shooting with Aditya in Hyderabad. So these two are my favourites," said the actress.

It looks like, "Gunday` the latest offering from the house of YRF featuring Priyanka,Ranveer and Arjun has passed the BO acid test soon after its release.

"Gunday" which was released on 2000 screens, opened with occupancy of around 70 percent in the cinema halls. And on day 1 this action packed love triangle raked in approximately 16.12 crores.

Although on its second day the business of "Gunday" tumbled and this action thriller of Ali Abbas could garners Rs 12.63 crores on Saturday. But due a positive word of mouth publicity it regained its momentum on Sunday and earned 15.18 crores at the ticket window, which made its opening weekend's domestic collection around 43.93 crores.

After witnessing the first three day's collection of "Gunday" one thing seems to be for sure that made at a budget of 50-55 crores the movie will conveniently recover its cost of production and with no major commercial movie scheduled to release on coming Friday, it may near the 100 crore mark too.

Besides, with the BO success of "Gunday" which it has achieved so far, another fact which has become quite conspicuous is that Guday's leading man Ranveer Singh has turned into a crowd puller of a sort whose mere presence in the movie can compel the masses to enter the cine arenas.

I just want to be famous: Saqib Saleem

"Mere Dad Ki Maruti" fame actor Saqib Saleem says he wants to be popular and also explore more as an actor.

"There are no limitations as an actor. I just want to be famous. As an actor, one should not limit themselves. As long as the script is justified, I am fine with anything," Saqib, who did a lip-lock scene with Randeep Hooda in "Bombay Talkies", told IANS.

The brother of popular actress Huma Qureshi says negative stories or link-up rumours don't effect him.

"Yes, we are public figures and we wanted this kind of life but a few negative stories don't effect me or my family. As far as Huma's rumours or link-ups with (filmmaker) Anurag Kashyap is concerned, we find such stories laughable, there is no truth to these rumours," he said.

"Huma is my best friend and I think she is in a position which is why there is so much written about her," added Saqib, who is shooting for Amol Gupte's "Hawaa Hawaai".

People say my mental age is around 30: Alia Bhatt

People say my mental age is around 30: Alia Bhatt

'Student of the Year' actress, Alia Bhatt, who turned 20 on the sets of her upcoming film 'Highway', says she has gained more than just experience while shooting for the movie

The tattoo on the nape of Alia Bhatt's neck makes a blink-and-miss appearance as she casually adjusts her hair while settling down next to us. And since it's spelt Patakha, we can't help but wonder if it's got anything to do with Patakha guddi, one of the songs in her upcoming movie Highway, but she puts that thought to rest. `It is not permanent but I won't mention what's it for at the moment. It's definitely not for Highway though,` she adds.

Dressed in a sheer black top, skinny jeans and with her lips painted a shade of hot pink, Alia looks closer to her character Shanaya in her debut movie Student of the Year (SOTY), than that of Veera in Highway. Anyone who's seen the promos of the film can see that there are no designer clothes or any trace of make-up on the young actor's face. And that, says Alia, was one of the things she enjoyed the most during the shoot of the road movie. `I didn't miss the designer clothes and make-up. I enjoy wearing designer clothes but there are times, when I just want to lounge around in my pyjamas and this movie was like an extended version of it,` she grins. Another thing that she didn't do was look at the monitor once a scene was shot. `I didn't want to see how I was looking. Otherwise, I would start worrying about looking fat or looking bad on-screen,` she adds.

From playing a snooty, wealthy, teeny bopper in her debut film, to roughing it out on real locations (sleeping on roadsides, climbing trees and travelling in trucks) for her second movie, it's been a journey of revelation for the 20-year-old. `People say my mental age is around 30 but I'm actually really young. So there was a whole new discovery that I made during the shoot of Highway. I literally found a new person inside me because I tapped into emotions I never thought I had,` she says, adding that her dad Mahesh Bhatt too, had predicted of these changes. `He genuinely believes this movie would change my life, if not my career. It's already done half of that, we'll see about the career bit later,` she smiles.

And when it comes to her career, Alia admits she's not much of a planner. `I try not to calculate too much. It kills the fun and the spontaneity,` she says. After SOTY, Alia says she could have easily done another high school film. `I feel I got an opportunity with Highway and I took it. This film was a blessing in disguise,` she adds.

She even got a chance to sing for AR Rahman for her second film. `We used to sing and dance in between shots and director Imtiaz Ali heard me sing. He suggested my name to Rahman sir for a portion in the film where Veera sings,` reveals Alia. And she certainly enjoyed the experience of the unexpected opportunity of singing the song Sooha saha. `I love reading my name in front of singer!` she giggles, reminding us again that mentally she might be 30 years old but in reality, but she is in fact, a 20-year-old girl.
