When they ran to save their lives for the first time, they were mere 12-year-old boys, and the world called them 'refugees'.

The war of 1971 gave birth to a new country - Bangladesh. It also gave birth to two young orphans - Bikram and Bala. They witnessed the war and its aftermath, where the world tried to trample over them. Fighting for survival, they clung to each other and escaped to Calcutta.

Before they knew the world, they knew each other. Such was their bond, such was their friendship.

Each time they sought new beginnings, each time they would rise, the world would crush them down. So, they fought again... and again. Together they were unbeatable. They were unstoppable. They were inseparable.

In the years that passed, Bikram and Bala, became Calcutta's most loved, most celebrated, most reckless, most fearless and most powerful GUNDAY!

They had everything... then, one fine day, bells rang...

Nandita, the most beautiful cabaret dancer, walked into their lives, and they lost everything to her. Their murky world turned magical and colourful. They fell head over heels in love with her.

But that was only a blissful lull before an impending storm...

And then entered ACP Satyajeet Sarkar, the right for every wrong, a law for every outlaw and a counter force for Bikram and Bala.

What follows from here is the most sensational-most thrilling-most dramatic story ever told!

Michael Schumacher`s boss insists attempts to wake him up continue
London: Formula one legend Michael Schumacher`s manager, Sabine Kehm has insisted that attempts to wake Schumacher up are continuous and the fight would go on.

Sabine denied that the doctors had given up on reviving the ace Formula one racer, as fans feared the worst after reports said that they were no longer trying to get Schumacher out of his induced coma.

According to the Daily Star, Sabina said that Schumacher`s recovery, which was taking a long time, could lead to many `misinterpretations` about his condition.

The legendary Formula One has been deliberately put in induced coma after Schumacher hit his head on a rock while skiing in the French Alps on December 29.

Last week, Schumacher had reportedly `reacted with his mouth` during a secret visit to the Grenoble hospital by his former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa .

Also, the former Formula 1 world champion`s family had thanked his fans for their get well wishes on the F1 legend`s website.

Anirban aims to defend title at season-opening SAIL-SBI Open

Anirban aims to defend title at season-opening SAIL-SBI Open
New Delhi: Two-time defending champion Anirban Lahiri would be eyeing a hat-trick at the Asian Tour`s season-opening USD 300,000 SAIL-SBI Open which will tee off at the prestigious Delhi Golf Club from Wednesday.

The 26-year-old golfer, who beat Thailand`s Prom Meesawat and compatriot Rashid Khan in play-offs in 2012 and 2013 respectively, will have to compete against a stellar field, including former Order of Merit champions Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand.

The Indian challenge will be strengthened by the presence of former Asian Tour winners SSP Chowrasia, Digvijay Singh, Rahil Gangjee, Jyoti Randhawa and Himmat Singh Rai. Rashid Khan, the 2013 SAIL-SBI Open runner-up and reigning Rolex Rankings champion on the PGTI, will once again be a force to reckon with on his home course.

"I had a good couple of season in the last two years because I had a good start to the season. It is important factor for success. This is the only year that I have played a lot of golf before SAIL open, so in a way I am match fit," Lahiri told reporters. "This is my sixth SAIL open and I have played in DGC. Despite the recent rains and winter, DGC is still in good shape and I have managed to find a strategy here and I would look to do the same this year and I hope to be win the title for the third time," added Lahiri, who finished third on the Merit list last season.

The field also includes EurAsia Cup teammates Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh and Malaysia`s Nicholas Fung, the 2013 Asian Development Tour No.1. Other leading golfers include Thailand`s Prayad Marksaeng, winner of the season-ending King`s Cup Golf Hua Hin in January, countrymen Prom Meesawat, Chawalit Plalphol, Chapchai Nirat and Arnond Vongvanij, Filipino Angelo Que, Korea`s Kim Gi-whan and American Berry Henson.

Himmat said, "We always look forward to DGC. It is so unique and its variation always offer something new in it. The golf course is in good shape and there would be plenty of scoring opportunities and I hope I can club together four rounds of exciting golf."

Talking about the golf course, Lahiri said, "I played nine holes. It is playing good. I came here a couple of weeks. It is difficult for a golf course to recover from winter and there were rains. They are little faster but they will improve if it gets some sunshine."

Lahiri enjoyed four other top-10s and a successful Major debut at the British Open where he finished tied 31st. The Indian had a magical ace during the third round. Last year, he finished second at Worldwide Selangor Masters, Venetian Macau Open and Indian Open

German athlete denies conscious doping

German athlete denies conscious doping
Berlin: The attorneys of German biathlete Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle Monday denied the accusation of conscious or "even willful" doping, three days after the biathlete was kicked out of the Sochi Games due to positive doping test result.

"On the basis of the existing evidence, there is no indication available for this," Xinhua quoted her as saying in a press release published by the management of the German biathlete.

Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle will make personal comments again, when the cause of the positive doping test is "clearly identified", declared her lawyers.

The biathlete asserted a statement after being tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine, saying, "I`m just experiencing the worst nightmare one can imagine, I`m therefore at a complete loss to explain how this positive test result comes about."

Her lawyers stated that Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle is still in shock.

They also announced to approach especially the German Ski Federation "to discuss the next steps together".

Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle, the double Olympic gold medallist, will help in the coming days in clarification of the facts.

Sachenbacher-Stehle, 33, who has won five Olympic medals in cross-country skiing, finished fourth in the 12.5km mass start race last week.

I'm redeemed, says Jamaican sprinter Campbell-Brown

I`m redeemed, says Jamaican sprinter Campbell-Brown
Kingston (Jamaica): Celebrated Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown has claimed redemption after she was cleared to resume her track and field career following a ruling that she had not used the banned substance last year for performance enhancement.

The Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS) cleared Campbell-Brown of any wrongdoing, paving the way for her to resume a glittering career that has included golds at Athens in 2004 and at Beijing 2008, CMC reported.

VCB, as she is popularly known in the track and field world, released a statement Monday referencing black American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr and stating her intention to resume her career and philanthropic work.

"Yes, I lost out on the opportunity to compete for most of 2013 and the chance to defend my World 200m title, however, I press on," said Campbell-Brown who missed the IAAF World Championships in Moscow last August.

"Martin Luther King Jr spoke of the redemptive quality of unearned suffering and I must say I am redeemed."

She has been sidelined since testing positive for a banned diuretic at the Jamaica International Invitational in May.

Campbell-Brown said the last few months of her life have "brought much pain and suffering" as she waited for a resolution of her drug case.

"The final court available to us as athletes have spoken and humbly I say they have confirmed my innocence," said the Jamaican sprinter.

"I harbour too much self-respect and a similar respect for the purity of competition to resort to illegal means to success. This same self-respect will now enable me to leave behind the insensitive and ill-informed media remarks and look towards returning to the track to give of my best to God`s glory."

The Jamaican sprinter has been under scrutiny with Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson, who were also tested positive for banned substances, forcing them to miss the Moscow World Championships.

She was suspended pending a Jamaican disciplinary committee review which deemed a reprimand sufficient because the banned substance was not used for performance enhancement.

"I would be remiss in not thanking the IAAF for expeditiously handing my case to the CAS," said Campbell-Brown.

"My legal and management team will be available to address the media in greater details as I now focus on moving forward with my career and philanthropic efforts".

Campbell-Brown could return to competition at next month`s World Indoor Championships in Poland, with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July also an option.

82-year-old 'Marathon Man' pens joys of running

82-year-old `Marathon Man` pens joys of running
New Delhi: At 82, when many find daunting the prospect of even taking a walk, Ashis Roy has completed 115 marathon runs across the world within a span of 28 years.

He has chronicled the journey in his second book "Wonderful Joys of Running," which also talks about the benefits of running. "I took up running at the age of 50 simply to better my health but what I discovered was a passion. Running not only made me healthy, it changed my personality," the practising physician cardiologist said. Roy, who does not let age come in the way of a career in running, released his book at the Press Club of India here yesterday.
"My friends who served with me in Indian Air Force where I worked for 21 years, said that I was very short-tempered and grumpy but now I am a changed man, much calmer and stress free," he said.

Roy has run 44 marathons in the US and 12 in Canada. Other countries include UK, Greece, Finland, Russia, Pakistan and Macau. "The lowest point was when in November 2011 my right lower limb was paralysed and I had to go for a neuro-surgical operation. It took me almost two years to recover and run marathons again," he said.
Roy claims to hold the unbroken Indian National record of marathon for 55 plus age group which he made in 1987 in a record time of 3 hours 10 minutes. His first book was on "The Joy of Running".

The author said, "My second book book is divided into two parts, I have penned my experiences and memories from running all over the globe. It also contains benefits of running as well as how one can train for marathon running."

Taking a trip down the memory lane he said, "Ranjit Bhatia who died few weeks back, was a great friend and an inspiration. He was the first one to spot me while he was a journalist for a news channel."

He added, "The other big inspiration was Emil Zatopek who was my childhood idol and still is." Zatopek who went by the name "Czech Locomotive" was a Czechoslovakia long distance runner who won many Olympic medals.
Emphasising the importance of running, Roy said it is often overlooked by people in India who are "crazy about sports like cricket and badminton".

"Running must be made compulsory for school children only then in the next 10 to 15 years, India can produce ace runners," he said. "Today my granddaughter runs and so does my daughter. One of the memorable moments we had was in September last year when we became the first father-daughter team to run a half marathon in Philadelphia," he recollects.

Roy completed his 115th marathon in January 2013 in Mumbai and says he is fit to run many more.

Judge rules most of Oscar Pistorius' trial can be televised

Judge rules most of Oscar Pistorius` trial can be televised
Pretoria: A South African judge ruled Tuesday that most of Oscar Pistorius`s trial for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend can be broadcast live, but not the Paralympian`s own testimony.

Judge Dunstan Mlambo said cameras would be allowed "to obtain a video and audio recording" of opening arguments, the evidence of state witnesses, closing arguments and the verdict and sentencing.

But cameras will not be allowed to film Pistorius, witnesses for the defence, or anyone else who objects to appearing on camera, he added.

A live audio broadcast will be allowed throughout the trial, which is due to open on Monday.

The ruling sets the stage for a court case that is likely to draw worldwide attention and which has already drawn parallels with the trial of disgraced American footballer OJ Simpson.

With the full glare of the world`s media bearing down upon him, the 27-year-old South African sprinter will appear in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to hear one charge of murder and three firearms charges.

Pistorius is accused of the Valentine`s Day murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius admits to shooting 29-year-old Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door, but claims he mistook her for an intruder.

Media outlets had applied to broadcast the trial via remote-controlled cameras inside the courtroom.

A 24-hour channel dedicated to his trial starts on South African network television on Sunday.

Pistorius`s legal team was fiercely opposed to the trial being broadcast, saying it would infringe on the athlete`s rights and distort proceedings.

It was not immediately clear if the defence would appeal Tuesday`s ruling.

Pistorius, whose legs were amputated below the knee when he was a young boy, rose to global fame sprinting on two fibre-optic blades.

Known as the "Blade Runner", he ran against able-bodied athletes in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Dubai Open: Federer serves up hot starter

Dubai Open: Federer serves up hot starter
Dubai: Grand Slam record-holder Roger Federer began the second phase of what he hopes will be a revival of his fortunes by racing into the second round of the Dubai Open. In the process, he displayed some care-free hitting, lively footwork, and an air of authority which evoked his greatest days.

Beating Benjamin Becker, the German once ranked in the a top 40, 6-1, 6-4, was some way from suggesting these might return, but Federer did look pleasingly upbeat and confident as he dispatched a competent middle-range opponent in only 62 minutes.

The 32-year-old Swiss legend, now ranked only eight, wants to do well in Dubai to show his Australian open semi-final last month represented a step forward and not backwards, and that his game still has the potential to reach its former levels.

"I`m playing top tennis right now, so I don`t need to top that stuff," Federer claimed for his Melbourne efforts, which saw him beat Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and former Australian Open finalist Tomas Berdych. "For me it`s a matter of staying healthy now, staying consistent, and getting to semi-finals and finals consistently and giving myself opportunities really. I feel I am in good enough shape as in a year at least now."

Certainly Federer has never made a more eye-catching start to this tournament. He made several effective forays to the net and found an extra gear with his ground strokes when he had chances to break serve, which he did twice in the first set and once in the second.

He also managed one moment of pure theatre. Forced by a Becker lob to make a hasty retreat from the net, Federer not only managed that but responded with a hot dog - a shot between the legs - which parabola-ed into a perfect counter-lob, and set up an unanswerable drop shot.

"It`s rare to hit a lob with a hot dog, and I`m happy he got the ball back," said Federer, probably wishing not to humiliate Becker, though the rapture with which the winning two-shot combo was received must have been disconcerting. Federer`s only faltering moments came while he was closing the match out at 5-4. He failed to convert two match points, made three unforced errors in a row and went break point down when he volleyed wide.

But afterwards he seemed satisfied with his work. "You have to be a little bit confident to play attacking tennis," he said. "Thank god I served well, which you have to in the quicker conditions here in Dubai. Then if you hit well you have an opportunity to come in."

It had been, he suggested "really good fun out there." Relaxation was at the root of his confidence, and days of practice on these Dubai courts was how he engendered the confidence. "Really I`ve been preparing for this like for a really big tournament. I`ve been here since Saturday now, or Friday", Federer said.

"I`ve had over a week`s preparation with not much to do other than practise, so it`s been a really good preparation. I hope it`s going to pay off." If he wins the title back he will prevent Novak Djokovic from equalling his record of five titles here. He next plays the winner between Radek Stepanek, the gifted former top ten Czech, and Michael Russell, the 106th ranked American, and is seeded to play Djokovic in the semis.

Djokovic begins his campaign on Tuesday against Denis Istomin, the world number 54 from Uzbekistan.

Bopanna-Qureshi in quarters of Dubai event

Bopanna-Qureshi in quarters of Dubai event
Dubai: Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi progressed to the doubles quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Championships after overcoming qualifiers Nikolay Davydenko and Victor Hanescu via Super Tie breaker, here.

The second seeded Indo-Pak pair defeated the Russian-Romanian combo 6-1 5-7 10-8 in one hour and 28 minutes in the opening round of the USD 2,359,935 hard court tournament.
They next meet winner of the first round match between the pairs of the Oliver Marach/ Florin Mergea and Mahesh Bhupathi/Denis Istomin.

Bopanna and Qureshi broke their rivals twice to run away with the opening set. However, Davydenko and Hanescu regrouped to break the second seeds twice in the second set to stretch the match to a Super Tie-Breaker.

Bopanna and Qureshi held their nerves to edge past the Russian-Romanian pair in the Super Tie-Breaker.

Jeevan and Sanam move to 2nd round of Chandigarh ITF Futures

Jeevan and Sanam move to 2nd round of Chandigarh ITF Futures
Chandigarh: Top seed Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and second seed Sanam Singh faced stiff resistance from their opponents before prevailing in straight sets in their respective first round matches of the USD 10,000 ITF men`s Futures tournament, here on Tuesday.

Jeevan overcame compatriot Abhijeet Tiwary 6-3 6-4 while Sanam battled past Taipei`s Jui-Chen Hung 6-2 7-5 on court one at the CLTA stadium. Left-handed Jeevan lost his serve in the very first game of the match but came back strongly to reel off four straight points to take a 5-3 lead and served out the set.

The second set was 3-3 as Tiwari kept fighting hard. Jeevan had a break chance in the seventh game but could not convert. However, he capitalised on his next chance in the ninth game and served out the match in the 10th.

Jeevan will fight it out with compatriot Vishnu Vardhan for a place in the quarterfinals. Vardhan had to dig deep to beat national hard courts champion and qualifier Mohit Mayur Prakash 4-6 6-3 6-4 in his opening round.

Sanam pocketed the first set in a jiffy as he let Hung hold his serve only once even as the local boy also dropped his serve in the fourth game. However, the Taipei player threatened to turn the tables on Sanam despite dropping serve in the first game of the second set. Trailing 1-3, looking down and out, Hung saved two break chances in the fifth game and won three games on the trot to take a 4-3 lead.

Sanam saved a breakpoint in the eighth game and converted a chance on the Hung`s serve in the 11th game to again take advantage. He easily served out the match in the 12th. In other matches, Sasi Kumar Mukund trounced compatriot Anvit Bendre 6-1 6-1 to set up a second round clash with Dutch Antal Van der duim, who recorded an identical win against Indian qualifier Tejas Chaukulkar.

Biggest win for Somdev Devvarman after Del Potro retires hurt in Dubai

Biggest win for Somdev Devvarman after Del Potro retires hurt in Dubai
Dubai: India number one Somdev Devvarman today recorded the biggest win of his career by beating world number five Juan Martin Del Potro but the victory came when the Argentine retired mid-way into the first round match of the Dubai Duty Free Championships, here.

Somdev, ranked 78, had won the first set 7-6 (3) in an hour and seven minutes and immediately after this, Del Potro took a medical timeout due to pain in his left wrist.

The Argentine second seed found it tough to continue and conceded the match.

Somdev had lost 4-6 4-6 to Del Potro last year at this very event in the pre-quarterfinals.

This is Somdev`s first ever win against a top-5 player who is also a Grand Slam champion. Del Potro is the 2009 US Open winner.

Somdev has competed against the legends of the game, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but haven`t won against any of them, although he fought well against all these multiple Grand Slam winners.

He lost to Nadal in 2011 at Indian Wells Masters in two close sets and the same year he had lost to Federer at this very Dubai event.

Last year in his second meeting against the Swiss legend at the Roland Garros, he suffered a tame defeat in the second round.

Against Djokovic, he lost in straight sets at the Miami Masaters last year.

Before today`s match, his one of the biggest wins were against Croatia`s Marin Cilic (world number 15) and Ivo Karlovic (world number 25) in 2009 and against Cyprus` world number 22 Marcos Baghdatis (world number 22) in 2010.

Somdev was well prepared coming into this tournament as he had won the Delhi Open Challenger tournament on Suday. He had reached the semifinals of the Chennai and Kolkata events in the preceding weeks.

The Indian traded a break with Del Potro before pushing the match into tie-breaker. He kept hitting it on the backhand of the Argentine, inducing unforced errors from his big-bodied rival.

Arsene Wenger backs Tomas Rosicky to stay at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger backs Tomas Rosicky to stay at Arsenal
London: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is "absolutely adamant" midfielder Tomas Rosicky will stay with the Gunners when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Czech replaced club record signing Mesut Ozil, suffering from a thigh injury, last weekend and scored title-chasing Arsenal`s third goal ina 4-1 Premier League win over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium.

Rosicky, 34, joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in 2006, but has seen his time with the north London club hampered by a string of injuries.

However, Wenger said Monday: "Tomas Rosicky will stay. We have an agreement with him and it will come out soon.

"I am absolutely adamant he has to stay at the club," the Frenchman added.

"He always makes things happen, not with individual dribbling but with individual acceleration of his passing and of his runs.

"When he arrived here he was less a tactical player and more the `Mozart from Prague` and he was purely a creative, offensive player.

"Today he is a real organiser on the pitch as well. I like to have him in the team because he gives a real structure to our team."

Santos fan killed in post-match violence - club

Sao Paulo: A fan of Brazilian side Santos has died after he was beaten up leaving a league match in Sao Paulo, which will host the opening match of the World Cup, his club said.

The 34-year-old fan was attacked by some 15 fans, who beat him with metal bars at a bus stop following a match between Pele`s former side Santos and Sao Paulo.

Media reported another supporter, aged just 15, was in a serious condition after being attacked at a metro station.

The club said it abhorred "acts of violence which, sadly, result in victims, one of them fatal" in this instance.

Santos said football required a "culture of peace ... As an essential condition for the development of football worldwide."

Globo television said the victim, Marcio Barreto de Toledo, had been with two other Santos fans who managed to flee as he was set upon.

"I think they only stopped hitting him when they got tired of doing so, not because somebody showed up," Globo quoted the victim`s wife, Samanta Ferreira dos Santos, as saying.

The couple had a five-month-old baby.

Toledo died in the early hours yesterday after being admitted to hospital after Sunday`s goalless draw.

Globo said no arrests had been made by last evening in connection with the killing.
Brazil, which will host the World Cup between June 12 and July 13, has been beset by repeated incidences of violence at matches in recent months.

Fans of Corinthians burst into the club`s training centre last month and tried to strangle Peruvian striker Paolo Guerrero and threatened to break the legs of former striker Alexandre Pato, who promptly left the club in a loan deal with Sao Paulo.

In December, images were beamed around the globe after fans of Vasco de Gama and Atletico Paranaense clashed violently, leaving one fan needing to be airlifted to hospital from the pitch.
Brazil and world football`s governing body FIFA insist nothing will be left to chance regarding fan security at the 12 World Cup venues.

Last week, authorities and FIFA revealed a total of 170,000 security personnel, including 20,000 private security professionals, would be deployed in a tightly integrated security matrix.
And President Dilma Rousseff said last week that troops would be mobilised "if necessary" to ensure fan security at the event.

Bayern's Mueller suffers pulled hamstring

Bayern`s Mueller suffers pulled hamstring
Munich: Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller suffered a pulled hamstring during the 4-0 win at Hanover 96 on Sunday, the Bundesliga leaders said in a statement on Monday.

"Mueller has been ordered to rest for the next five days before resuming light training," Bayern said.

The 24-year-old, who scored twice against Hanover, will miss Saturday`s home match against Schalke 04.

The injury could also mean that Mueller misses Germany`s first match of the year, a friendly at home to Chile on March 5.

Zidane`s son to try out for France Under-19s
Paris: Zinedine Zidane`s son Enzo has won the chance to be selected for the French Under-19 squad, a potential first step along the path of his father, who rose to international fame winning the World Cup with his country in 1998.

The Real Madrid youth midfielder, who will be 19 on March 24, will take part in trials and medical tests early next month, a list of players on the French Football Federation website showed on Monday.

The elder Zidane, 41, and now Carlo Ancelotti`s assistant coach at Real, is widely seen as one of the world`s footballing greats and in 2004 was named Europe`s best player of the past 50 years by a UEFA poll.

Hull City and Charlton advance to FA Cup quarter-finals

Hull City and Charlton advance to FA Cup quarter-finals
London: Goals from Curtis Davies and Robert Koren earned Hull City a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 replay win at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday.

Charlton Athletic lifted some more of their gloom as the relegation-threatened second-tier side won 2-1 at fellow Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday to end hopes of a Sheffield derby in the last eight.

Davies scored Hull`s opening goal with a looping header from Koren`s corner in the 14th minute as the Premier League team dictated play.

Koren then added a second in the 36th minute when his free kick - via a deflection from Keith Andrews - beat Peter Brezovan in the visiting goal.

Second tier Brighton managed to halve the deficit in the 68th minute through top scorer Leonardo Ulloa, who also scored in the 1-1 draw in the initial tie last Monday, but they struggled to carve out any more meaningful opportunities.

Hull host boss Steve Bruce`s former side Sunderland in the quarter-finals while Charlton face a trip to third tier Sheffield United with the ties to be played March 8-9.

Arsenal host Everton and Manchester City welcome holders Wigan Athletic in a repeat of last season`s final in the other matches.

Charlton, who sit in the Championship relegation zone, beat promotion chasing Queens Park Rangers on Saturday and the momentum that result provided continued on Monday as they dominated the early proceedings at Hillsborough.

Callum Herriott opened the scoring for the visitors in the 22nd minute when his swerving strike nestled in the top corner.

Leon Best equalised for Wednesday in the 57th minute, converting from close range, but Simon Church restored Charlton`s advantage when he nodded home Johnnie Jackson`s free kick eight minutes later.

Wednesday had chances to force a replay, with the initial tie postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, but Londoners Charlton held on.

Chelsea 'legend' Drogba offers no favours in Turkey

Chelsea `legend` Drogba offers no favours in Turkey
Istanbul: Galatasaray`s Didier Drogba will be full of emotions when he strides out to face former club Chelsea on Wednesday but Jose Mourinho knows the striker will be as clinical as ever on the field.

The Champions League last-16 first-leg clash in Istanbul is the first time the Ivorian has been on the pitch with the Blues since scoring the winning penalty when Chelsea lifted the trophy in May 2012.

The 35-year-old, who media reports say could return to the London club as striker coach, is Chelsea`s record European scorer with 34 goals in 69 games.

Including the spot kick in the Munich shootout and his header late in normal time, he has also bagged nine goals in nine domestic and European finals. His sizeable contribution to the club`s recent history is apparent from the number of posters of him still dotted around Stamford Bridge.

"It`s a strange feeling but, as we know him so well, we know that for him no friends during the game," Chelsea boss Mourinho, who managed Drogba during his first spell at the club, told reporters.

"Before the game, big friends and big respect for a legend. After the game, the same. But, during the game, we have a job to do. He has his nature, he wants to score, he wants to win. I think it is a tie to go until the end.

"He deserves a reception here even better than mine, because he deserves much more than me. For Didier, double or three times better and bigger than I had."

Drogba moved to Chelsea in 2004, Mourinho`s first season, and stayed after the Portuguese departed in 2007.

He left the club a few days after their Champions League triumph, saying he had achieved everything he wanted with Chelsea, before spending a few months playing in China and then moving on to Turkey.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Mourinho, who rejoined Chelsea in the close season, has already experienced playing against Drogba in the Champions League.

He was at Inter Milan four years ago when they took on Drogba and Chelsea and also held the reins at Real Madrid last year when the Spanish giants met Galatasaray.

Both times Mourinho was on the winning side.

Galatasaray manager Roberto Mancini, who is no stranger to Premier League side Chelsea after coaching Manchester City for four seasons before joining the Istanbul club last September, was not too optimistic about his side`s fate.

"I know Chelsea very well. For us it will be a very difficult game because Chelsea are used to playing these important games but we want to play a good game if it`s possible," the Italian said.

"They have improved a lot in the last two months. We went through in a difficult group with Real Madrid and Juventus and I think it was a miracle. Now we are here and I don`t know if we can do another miracle but we want to try. In football never say never."

As well as Drogba, Galatasaray will rely on Mourinho`s ex-Inter playmaker Wesley Sneijder as well as Selcuk Inan, whose penalty gave them 1-0 victory over Istanbul rivals Besiktas on Saturday.

Mourinho is hoping Brazil defender David Luiz and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel, who missed the 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday with minor injuries, will be fit for Wednesday.

Oscar is carrying a knock while January signings Mohamed Salah and Nemanja Matic are cup-tied.

FIFA delegation inspects Kochi stadium
Kochi: A three-member FIFA delegation headed by Deputy Director of competitions, Inaki Alvarez, today visited the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, which has been shortlisted by the All India Football Federation to host the U-17 World Cup in 2017, for preliminary inspection.

The two other members of the delegation were Vijay Parthasarthy, FIFA`s competitions manager and Shaji Prabhakaran, FIFA South and Central Asia Development officer.

Later speaking to reporters, Alvarez said the place has history and tradition of football.

"What we have seen so far is very encouraging. It is good to see that there is commitment and passion for football," he said.

The delegation had met Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here last night. Chandy assured them of all assistance.

India has eight proposed venues from which six would be selected.

The delegation has already visited Mumbai, Pune, Goa and Bangalore, and would be visiting New Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati.

Rooney yearns for more Champions League glory

Rooney yearns for more Champions League glory
London: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he will not be satisfied if he finishes his career without lifting the Champions League trophy again.

Rooney, who signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract earlier this week, tasted glory in the competition with United in 2008, before finishing on the losing side in the final against Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.

United have not looked like potential European champions this season, falling 15 points off the pace in the Premier League and crashing out of both domestic cup competitions, but Rooney says that their objectives remain the same.

"You always want to win it," he said on Monday, on the eve of the first leg of United`s last 16 tie away to Greek champions Olympiakos in Piraeus.

"To win one is never enough, especially at this club. You need to keep trying to get into finals.

"The feeling you get when you actually win the trophy is incredible, so there`s no way you want to stop at one. You want to win every year.

"Obviously that`s impossible, but if we can go to the final, it`d be great for us. It`s an opportunity to win another trophy, so hopefully we can do that."

Barcelona and defending champions Bayern Munich have already produced shows of strength in the tournament with 2-0 first-leg wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in their respective last 16 ties.

However, rather than being daunted by the sight of United`s domestic rivals coming unstuck, Rooney says it has only whetted his appetite for the competition.

"They`ve been brilliant (games) to watch," he told a press conference.

"You see Barcelona against Manchester City. Barcelona were incredible and keep the ball really well.

"Then you watch Bayern Munich and it`s almost the perfect performance at Arsenal. I know both teams (City and Arsenal) were down to 10 men, but the way they keep the ball and open teams up is great to watch.

"We have to try to do that, try and keep the ball, be patient and break teams down. A lot of the teams we`re playing are sitting back with all the team, so it`s down to us to move the ball quickly and break them down."

United centre-backs Phil Jones and Jonny Evans have not travelled to Greece due to injury and record signing Juan Mata is cup-tied, but manager David Moyes has an otherwise strong squad to select from.

United will start as favourites against a team who last reached the quarter-finals in 1999, but with Olympiakos having pipped Benfica to a place in the knockout phase, Moyes says that they must be respected.

"Olympiakos have done very well against Paris Saint-Germain in the games I`ve watched, and Benfica," he said.

"They came through in a difficult group, they`ve got a great home record here, so we know it`s a difficult night. They`ve a big support. It`s a tough game."

With United 11 points adrift of Liverpool in the race for a top-four place in the league, they may need to win the Champions League to qualify for next season`s competition, but Rooney believes that the Olympiakos tie can act as a springboard to a successful run-in.

"As a group of players we have to take responsibility for our league position," said the 28-year-old England striker.

"We know we`re better than that and we haven`t performed as well as we know we can do. We know that and as a team it hurts when you know you can do better.

"It`s important that we finish the season strongly and take that momentum into next year, but more importantly we try and get into that fourth spot and try and do well in the Champions League. It`s important to us all."
