Meet Kuldeep Yadav, India’s only Chinaman

New Delhi: Indian colts registered their second consecutive win in the ongoing ICC U-19 World Cup, defeating Scotland by 5 wickets. The star for India was country’s lone Chinaman, Kuldeep Yadav, who grabbed 4 wickets, including ICC U-19 World Cup’s first ever hat-trick.

Yadav returned with figures of 10-1-28-4 and accounted for Nick Farrar, Kyle Stirling, and Alex Baum off successive balls. His superb bowling helped India restrict Scots for just 88, a total that the defending champions overhauled for the loss of 5 wickets.

Kuldeep is currently India’s only Chinaman bowler. A Chinaman is a left-handed leg-spinner, and India last boasted of this rare variety in the form of Hyderabad’s Mumtaz Hussain back in 1960 Yadav has been lapped up by IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, and his experience and exposure there can propel him to the big league.

Considering that there have never been too many left-handed leg spinners in world cricket, young Kuldeep’s future looks reasonably bright.

Incidentally, Kuldeep came close to quitting cricket altogether when he was in standard IX. However, giving in to his father’s persistence, Kuldeep revived his passion for the game and became a regular feature in Uttar Pradesh’s U-15, U-17, and U-19 squads. In one such camp in Bangalore, he met Shane Warne, and his stint with legendary leggie did wonders to his confidence and guile.

Kuldeep’s bowling has the required variations and poise to stand him in good stead in long run. His control over line and length in immaculate, and quite surprisingly for the bowler of his age, he possesses all the lethal weapons required to succeed internationally. He has a trusted googly, a flipper, a faster one, and a slider in his armoury.

Here’s Kuldeep’s youth ODI record prior to the game against Scotland:

Matches- 18
Wickets- 34
Average- 16.20
Strike Rate- 25.58
Best Bowling- 4/34
