Tezpur: In a shocking incident, villagers of Balishiha
in Sonitpur district lynched three persons on Wednesday over rumours
that naked men were at large to rape women. Lethaly armed villagers were
guarding the village when they stopped three men in a car. The three
men reportedly attacked the villagers. Suspecting these men to be the
rumoured rapists, the villagers retaliated killing all three at the
spot.
Sonitpur district SP Arabinda Kalita said the three victims -- Ashutosh Das and Md Jalil of Dhekiajuli, and Prabin Bhawal of Rangapara -- were wanted criminals involved in car lifting and stealing of fuel from cars.
Rumour of the naked men has sparked fear in Tezpur area with people guarding their villages with lethal weapons to protect their women.
The authorities have appealed to the people not to carry lethal weapons during their night patrol. They have also appealed that any such incident should be reported to police.
