Sochi, Russia: After a gap of over two years,
India was finally able to register its official presence as a member of
Olympic association. Five days after the suspension of India was lifted,
India was finally able to hoist its flag at the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia.
The ban was lifted by International Olympic Association (IOA) on
February 11 following fresh elections. The lifting of the ban has
brought the total number of nations participating in the Winter Games to
88.
An emotional Indian Olympics Association President N Ramachandran thanked the IOC President Thomas Bach for lifting the ban.
Indian contingent participated in a small ceremony for hoisting the flag at the Games' site.
The ban was lifted after Indian Olympics Association conducted
elections as per the directives issued by International Olympic
Committee.
IOC put a ban on IOA after electing tainted men like Lalit Bhanot
(secretary general) and Abhay Singh Chautala (president). IOC demanded
that the elected members should be immediately dismissed in accordance
with the Olympic Charter.
